Draw me a golden staff and let me lean On your heaped up pile of discarded melody Ride me up in your chariot rhythm machine I don’t sleep, shake your tambourine I don’t sleep, shake your tambourine Away away I’m blind awake away To your pulsing gentle swaying tidal wave Wash me out let me hang I don’t sleep, you know what to shake I don’t sleep, you know what to shake

Mr. Rose 04:20
Rose was a man Like no other man He had a singular way about him That made it so hard to know him His wife got him dressed So he looked like the rest But his clothes couldn’t hide that he had his Own private side he had his Own rituals Like touching his toes Every morning at six He never would miss His own rituals His own rituals Rose had a job And he did his job well Mr. Rose was the kind Who would put his soul on the line He would always Be there at eight And he always worked straight he would Lend his good name to a cause The boss and the salesmen they called him Almost a saint A virtual saint Every morning at six He never would miss His own rituals His own rituals Then an Autumn day came When the jobs were no more And the causes he’d known Were like the leaves that had fallen Just like the clothes he had worn there was a Silence outside and a coldness within And then all he had left Was what he had to begin he had His own rituals Like touching his toes Every morning at six He never would miss His own rituals His own rituals

I’ve lost my way again I’ve come to a dead end I’ve used up all my time my love Please take me in your arms I’ve slept one hundred years And swept beneath the sea I’ve been pierced by spirit’s lances love Left holes in my tongue Then they stood me like a block of wood And they let their arrows fly They cut away my flesh my love To separate my bones Then they counted every one They found I had too few I did not pass the test my love Please take me in your arms Please take me in your arms

There’s a car on the street And it’s been in a wreck The windshield’s cracked out Where it met with two heads It was just yesterday I heard two cops point and say Dried blood on the seat That’s where he shot himself There’s a car on street And it’s been in a wreck The windshield’s cracked out Into glass spiderwebs Now it's just 2am And you’re upstairs asleep The window’s open But there stirs not a breeze Shut up Quit bothering me Shut up shut up please Please leave me alone So you creep to the sill And you peek down below It’s quiet as hell In the streetlight shadows Then the voice comes again Like it’s inside your head There’s a man in a knot Screaming out from the wreck Shut up Quit bothering me Shut up shut up please Please leave me alone

Shady Grove 05:46
Shady grove my true love Shady grove my darlin’ Shady grove my true love Going back to Harlan Once I was a pretty little boy Playing in the sand Now I am a great big boy Think myself a man I made myself a banjo Made it out of pine The only song that it would sing Trouble on my mind Trouble on my mind I went out a walkin’ A talk one day I chanced upon my own true love She passed my way Shady grove my true love Shady grove my darlin’ Shady grove my true love Going back to Harlan

Hold On 03:48
When your hopes turn into heartache And you’ve lost your way to be When your dreams of peace and brotherhood Smack up to reality When your small dog and your best friend Just bark and make you mad Don’t jump to no conclusions Hold on while you can Hold on Hold on And if you need something To get you through the night Just listen to this melody Everything’s going to be alright So do call for justice And do call for peace And don’t keep it bottled up And don’t call the police But when you’re on the platform And it’s 95 degrees And the loudspeaker’s just cracklin’ You can’t make out a thing Hold on Hold on

Talk about the Dalai Lama Comin’ to the Cinerama Lookin’ at my neighbor in the flesh Twenty times a day I ask The lord please let me live at last Thought about it hard and I’m a I’m a, I’m, I’m a Just part crazy I am Just part crazy I am Just part crazy I am Just... I.U.I. or I.V.F. or S.P.E.R.M. and eggs We’re mixed up in this reproductive stew Cow and pig and horse and ass All headed for the railroad tracks A three year old could tell as well that You and I are Just part crazy we are Just part crazy we are Just part crazy we are Just... Just...

Beautiful 03:13
Walk in park 8am Shadows of sleeping men Mothers in uniform Picking up around them Maid opens up the drapes Mistress is sleeping late Lights up a cigarette I walk by, it’s all so Beautiful Beautiful Subway ride 5:15 Plaster dust on my knee Businessman black cashmere Brush by oblivious Rush hour accident Pool of blood, ambulance One man’s decision holds Up half a million, it’s Beautiful Beautiful

In The Dark 04:30
Said a deaf man once to the blind I can’t hear so well speak up Said the blind man back very well I can’t see so good myself Yes I see you’re not perfect man That is not what I most need I got this alarm clock tells perfect time I need someone to hear it ring In the dark In the dark Blind man thought about that for a while Saying what is it that I most need? I might enjoy weekends by the shore But what I need is what needs me Thus he did reply with these words Rest assured I’ll hear it ring And if your time should come before that hour Part not with a veil of greed In the dark In the dark Deaf man understood not a word But he saw the blind agreed He set his clock upon solid ground Then he laid his head upon his knee Thus the day did pass into night And the night did bear a dream Why are we afraid in the dark? Fear is what we sow and reap In the dark In the dark

Say You Will 05:18
The cast of your eye The call of your grace Drew me to you Pity not us the cry of our lips Did we swear to Walking so close there only remained A simple crossing As you approach a foot on the plank I simply ask you Say you will Say you will Atoms explode Mountains collapse A simple fracture Two pointed words can two fragile hearts Force asunder Pity not us what fools can construct Can fools also pay for Bear not the rag for two idle minds Forced to wake up Say you will Say you will Head’s in a cloud A foot on the grave Where our love lies Torrents descend a cold wind arise Still our love lies Pity not us it’s new voices break The old ones give out An eye full of days, an ear full of nights Left to live out Say you will Say you will

about

The first album from Mr. Rose and Hit Repair Music with the first 10 of 21 songs recorded live in the studio with no overdubs in September of 2022.

Perhaps the only folk trio with just accordion, trombone, and hand drums, Mr. Rose plays a mix of traditional and original songs that push the envelope of Americana roots music to include other world music influences from West African drumming to mbira music from Zimbabwe. The songs range from traditional Cajun and Appalachian blues to topical ballads and love songs.

The album title comes from John’s involvement in environmental and abolitionist groups and his belief that taking care of ourselves and our neighbors in as direct a way as possible is always better than relying on outside forces.
